Description

On June 18, 1967, The Jimi Hendrix Experience performed at the Monterey International Pop Festival. After playing six months with his band in England it was Jimi's first gig in America. The set ended with a cover of The Troggs "Wild Thing" which culminated with Jimi kneeling over his painted Fender guitar, dousing it with lighter fluid, setting it aflame, and then smashing it repeatedly around the stage, finally throwing pieces of it into the crowd. [link] These actions produced unheard of sounds and only added to the mystique and the rising popularity of Hendrix in the U.S.

I Love My Guitar

Jimi Hendrix is known for his suggestive and destructive stage shows, especially the smashing of guitars. But for Hendrix, it wasn't an act of nihilism, but of love.

"He crouched down in the sun, a silver conch belt around his hips, white calf-length boots, gypsy waistcoat, a purple shirt, the box of colored inks and oils alongside his guitars. He was quite alone. I stood and watched a minute. It was like a Navajo dream - the warrior before the hunt."
~Eric Burdon of the Animals describing Jimi Hendrix painting this guitar prior to the Experience's Monterey set.

"We had our beautiful, rock-blues-country-funky-freaky sound and I felt like we were turning the whole world on to this new thing - the best, most lovely new thing. so I decided to destroy my guitar at the end of a song as a sacrifice. You sacrifice things your love. I love my guitar."
~Jimi Hendrix
